Abstract

This study presents the German sports system and some reflections on the Brazilian sports system. The German sports system has been discussed by authors such as Breuer and Nowy (2017), Lacerda (2017), Petry and Hallmann (2013), Petry, Steinbach and Burk (2008), among others. However, there is a gap in the discussion of the relationship between governmental entities and sports federations (Groeneveld, 2009), as well as in the dialogue between German and Brazilian reality. Dowling, Brown, Legg, and Grix (2018) point out that comparisons are part of the essence of being human and, in this sense, it is not surprising that comparative studies are one of the main interests for sociologists. In the field of sport, there are several initiatives to compare sport systems from different countries (SCHEERDER; WILLEM; CLAES, 2017; HALLMANN; PETRY, 2013; HOULIHAN; GREEN, 2008; BERGSGARD et al, 2007; HENRY, 2009, among others), with special attention to elite sport (ANDERSEN; RONGLAN, 2012; BERGSGARD et al, 2007; DE BOSSCHER et al, 2015; HOULIHAN; GREEN, 2008, among others), but with little attention to Brazil. Given the above, the aim of this study is to present the German sports system, seeking to unveil especially the relationship between government and sports federations. At the end of the text, some reflections are established in order to think the Brazilian sports system based on the discussion of the German system.
