Abstract

Epitaxial growth of graphene on metals has been known about for five decades and has encountered renewed interest since 2006-2007 when it was realized that graphene mass production is a major hurdle in the development of graphene-based applications. With the help of model systems, i.e. prepared in clean conditions (ultra-high vacuum) and at clean surfaces (single-crystalline metallic ones), much progress has been made towards the understanding of graphene growth on metals, from the elementary processes governing growth towards the tailoring of the morphology of the graphene samples. © 2011 Woodhead Publishing Limited.
