Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Geospatial Technologies (GeoTech)

Basic data for this project

Type of project: EU-project hosted at University of Münster
Duration: 05/04/2007 - 31/08/2012 | 1st Funding period

Description

The International Masters Program (Master of Science, M.Sc.) in Geospatial Technologies is a cooperation of the University of Münster (WWU), Institute for Geoinformatics (ifgi), Germany Universitat Jaume I (UJI), Institute for New Imaging Technologies (iNIT) Castellón, Spain, and Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL), Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação (ISEGI), Portugal. The three semester 90 ECTS program represents a reorganized continuation of the highly successful 2007 to 2012 program. It will again take in up to 32 students per year, starting in the academic year 20012/13. A total of over 20 faculty with strong academic backgrounds in a broad range of disciplines conduct the courses and theses, which represents a significant broadening over the previous program. The Masters Program starts each year in the fall/winter semester. All courses are provided in English only: The first semester offers two alternative learning paths, addressing the previous know-how and requirements of the incoming students. The courses at UJI focus on the provision of know-how in computer science, new media, and basics of geospatial information. UNL provides modules in mathematics, statistics, remote sensing, data modelling, and basics of geospatial information. The second semester, for all students at WWU, provides basic and advanced courses in GIScience. In addition, advanced courses in key competencies (research methods, project management) are provided. Each Master thesis (at one of the three sites) is closely linked to ongoing research projects of at least one of the partners, typically of two or three. Based on the successful completion of studies, the three universities jointly award the degree of "Master of Science" (M.Sc.) with the adjunct "in Geospatial Technologies". The Masters program targets a qualification for life-long learning in many application areas of Geographic Information (GI), such as environmental planning, health, logistics and transportation, geography, marketing, or energy provision. GI is a continuously growing market, lacking qualified personnel and offering excellent career chances. The Masters Program educates graduates and professionals from fields like geography, ecology, geology, surveying, planning, local administration, and computing, who are willing to acquire additional technology skills for applying them in their respective application areas. The hallmark of this program is to cover geospatial technologies broadly, at the forefront of their development and application, preparing students for future and emerging trends, rather than focusing on selected current technologies or applications that may only be en vogue for some time. The Masters program is funded by the Erasmus Mundus program 2007-2013, re-selected for another five editions starting in 2012. Further information: http://geotech.uni-muenster.de
