Multimedia Data Exploration

Basic data for this project

Type of project: Own resources project
Duration: 01/04/2008 - 30/09/2012

Description

With the advent of the information age and the increasing volume and variety of multimedia data, the question of how to support users in getting access and insight into large databases has become immensely important. While traditional content-based retrieval approaches provide query-driven access under the assumption that the users’ information needs are clearly specified, modern content-based exploration approaches support users in browsing and navigating through multimedia databases in the case of imprecise or even unknown information needs. By means of interactive graphical user interfaces, exploration approaches provide access to multimedia databases in a convenient and intuitive way. The objective of this research project is to develop and investigate user-centered exploration approaches for large-scale multimedia databases. To this end, we address the challenges of adaptability and scalability on conceptual as well as technical levels in order to design multimedia exploration approaches which are able to cope with millions of multimedia objects efficiently.
