Zusammenfassung

This chapter developes a systems theory perspective on the mediatization of politics. It deals with the question of what triggers the process of mediatization, what drives the process, and what consequences result from the process. Mediatization is defined as a supra-individual phenomenon that occurs within non-media social systems. It results from the differentiation of a media system containing its own intrinsic logic and the need for public attention expressed in other social systems. The term “mediatization” denotes not so much the passive submission of other systems to media forces but the active utilization of media services. Against this background the main causes and consequences of the mediatization of current politics are discussed.
