Zusammenfassung

This introductory chapter examines the themes of economization, commodification, privatization and standardization of education on a global scale. Providing conceptual mooring, it discusses the nature and meaning of each of these terms, considering also the significance of each for educational practice, policy and research. In comparative perspective, the chapter discusses developments that influence public education from K-12 to adult learning as state, private, non-governmental actors as well as international organizations expand, globally, their operations in the field of education. This discussion serves also as an introduction for the chapters to follow, which, respectively, examine K-12 schooling (Hornberg), higher education (Erfurth/Parreira do Amaral), and adult and continuing education (Ioannidou/Jenner), serve as contemporary examples demonstrating the global impetuses of educational economization, commodification, privatization, and standardization.
