Zusammenfassung

Abstract A number of international trends has influenced education research and teaching at higher education level during the past decades. Comparative and International Education (CIE) does not constitute any exception. On the contrary, in some cases CIE has spearheaded some of these trends and developments, in other cases it has been impacted by them. For instance, CIE scholarship was among the first to discuss widely the implications and challenges brought about by globalization, thus also introducing the topic to other subfields of education and further popularizing the phenomenon. On the other hand, CIE was impacted - directly and indirectly - for instance, in terms of renewed political and media attention to ‘international standards' and to comparative arguments at large but also, in the same breath, an approach to comparative research became dominant influencing how CIE is viewed in policy and practice circles, but also among students. In this chapter, we discuss some important issues and trends affecting CIE teaching in German universities. The chapter first discusses a number of issues and trends seen as influencing the field of CIE and how it is taught in the academy in Germany. Second, this contribution reflects on the potential (side) effects of these socio-political-cultural trends on the (self‑)understanding of CIE as a field of scholarly inquiry in education as well as on CIE teaching and learning.
